Shannon: no longer homeless
31 January, 2008We found a house! We’re moving tomorrow! To Mirimar in Wellington! Surreal? Yes. Especially since I had resigned myself to living in a box.
The house is reasonably sized, with 3 double rooms, and a big lounge, small kitchen, and overall the whole place is dry and mould free, and surprisongly well insulated.
My new room is a delightful shade of insipid orange/peach, and there was once a leak that made the whole room smell a bit musty, and the carpet is not actually carpet because it is lino, and the one window doesn’t let in a whole lot of light, but I have to tell you I am nothing but pleased.
And if that description makes you think that I’ll be living in a rotting peach coloured bathroom (Note to landlord: Lino goes in bathrooms, carpet goes in bedrooms) you’re very wrong. Its quite big, and has a wardrobe the size of some of the bedrooms we’ve been looking at lately, and once the dehumidifier gets in there, for a couple of months or so, that damp forest smell will come right out of those heavenly peach walls.
And of course that’s the most important thing of all: It has walls. And a roof (mine’s freshly painted after they had to fix that leak.) The windows and doors, and paint colour are just BONUSES. (Although I have to get a photo of the kitchen. It’s hilarious!)
All this is costing us a fraction of what we budgeted for rent and bond. Because we think the landlord may be a wee bit insane. But she’s lovely. Just very specific about noise and parties - ie: there will be none. Not even for birthdays.
My favorite part of living in Mirimar? It has to be the bus ride. Not because it’s short and convenient because it isn’t, but because it goes in front of the airport, and the planes fly 3 meters above the bus when they’re taking off and landing. What a ride home from work huh!

Sounds like a great house. Gotta get some pictures up. Show us your new bedroom!
Yippiee! glad to hear you found something. The ride in the bus with the planes flying overhead sounds cool!
HOORAY! you are not homeless! i hope i can say the same a month from now too, eek.
Hahaha, I’m so happy for you; walls and a ceiling and everything! Can’t wait to see a pic of that kitchen
woooo a house, awesome! About time too, one day of house hunting was bad enough I cant imagine how you were beginning to feel!
I seriously wont be able to find you guys next time I’m down, but on the plus if I ever fly to wellington I can jump out the emergency exit onto your bus!
Yay! Congrats on finding something in time! I’m very impressed.
